4月28日 I forgotTommorrow we film meeting the sangoma even though we flew her last week.
Two days ago we filmed Sebastian complaining about back ache and the sangoma is my fix on the way to Polokwane we will then thank her with a flight. Snows a dirty word!Sat waiting for the crew in theBierfassl and the weather has turned. We knew it would thats why we rushed to get the last shots done.
its likely that there will be snow on the Drakensberg tommorrow which sadly cant be filmed because it would not fit in with the flight we have made.
But more importantly for the area the mention of snow brings many people up out of the warm beaches of Durban to see.
They knock down fences and release animals agogo.
In Nottingham Road, snow is a dirty word. 4月27日 And so to homeThe forecast was right the weather did change today. So no flight.
just finished breakfast and we will be on the road around 0900 for a 5 hour drive home. We film THE SANGOMA AGAIN ON SUNDAY. And yes i have no idea why everything in the last line is in capitals flipping cell. 4月26日 BlimeyI don't know what happened but interest in my blog has increased.
Thankyou all those that read.
Because I forgot to pack my laptop charger all entries now are from my cellphone so short and sweet.
If I am disiplined enough I will add more flesh to the story when I get home.
But for now having visited the launch site of what would be an extra shot, I think we are finished.
I am glad we have still been more than fourthousand kilometres in a Landrover. thats never going to be good. TechnologySat in Zulu Nyala and an American is skyping someone and we can all hear it. We had this discussion in Kenya about allowing wireless broadband all over the camp and what would the tourists do.
I guess I know now.
Very intrusive. Fast flightWell we flew it was fast with nowhere to land but we lived. The flight will actually be the first in the film even though its the last to be shot. The magic of television. We now have a problem with the landrover so we will film us getting it sorted. Writting this adventure up properly is going to be a mission. I am going to try and embed a video clip that Sebastian took of the landing. If it does not work heres the YouTube URL for it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kv68mQj9H9k We had slowed down dramatically and a miracle space popped up!! Just the perfect fit for the balloon and probably the greenest smoothest bit of ground for the entire trip.
4月25日 Drakensberg flight and Dumazulu cultural villageJust a small entry from my cell phone.
we had a blinding flight in the Berg this morning. The mountains were crystal clear.
it was decided that the flight was enough. So having driven for 5 hours we are now at Dumazulu cultural village.
a pleasant place that we must fly over in the morning.
g 4月24日 It a funny old world.Well I was wrong, The dudes in the car arrived at 1830 having only set off two speed traps. Those that took the easy option have still not arrived. They landed in Durban a little late but those very helpful people at Avis had not sorted out there car. So at around 2030 they finally left Durban. I guess they will be here within an hour or so. The moral of the story, which I well know anyway is that hiring a car in South Africa is horrid. You might be in the right but the hire companies will always make you feel wrong. Its a given. G Checking the weather before bed and wondering if we will be the only people there. Weather or not.Its just coming up to 1300, Markus is fixing the Landrover back up and three of the crew are waiting to catch an aircraft to Durban whilst two are driving.
Personally coming all that way in a day I think is mad but we will see what time they arrive and what shape they are in.
The plan is to meet up later today at the Bierfassl and plan the attack for KwaZulu Natal.
Basically we will fly tommorrow morning here in the Drakensberg, setting up background pretty shots, then transfer to the Valley of 1000 hills for more of the same.
Then its upto Hluhluwe to film at Zulu Nyala and villages nearby.
I don't think its going to go that way heres weather links for all the locations.
All of them point to a dodgy Friday/Saturday so unbeknown to the crew I am setting up a Sangona to fly with us tommorrow and a flight from a place in the Drakensberg right next to a really pretty lake that reflects the mountains fantastically. Then it looks ok for the valley of 1000 hills, just. We should try and make the most of it.
Not looking forward to another long drive to Zulu Nyala, I have a friend, Tina who lives just over the road in Phinda so maybe I can go and visit her or fly a kite in the wind.
Jons daughter also lives up there so we will not be short of places to visit.
All we can do is plan and wait for everybody else to arrive in KwaZulu Natal. We are of course filming the first shots of the film as we did the last shot last week, Confused, so are we.
I have a feeling that we will be faking lots of the balloon shots in Hluhluwe.

The Big TreeBig Tree flight and school tether in PM
Protea Nwanedi18th April
Flight next to quarry ruins first visit to Madifa, Big Tree and Wilson Vondo Tea PlantationFlight over tea, goodbye Tim Dzata RuinsIn which we climb a big hill. Arriving and then departingI must add the tale of woe which saw us travelling alot further than we thought we would. Damwal 15th April 2007So fueled up but alas no coffee. This fact is causing a minor mutiny, especially from Mr Vynne.
Sunday mornings anywhere in the world are quiet but small towns in rural South Africa are especially slow.
Having left the domine (vicar) behind at the garage topping up with fuel prior to his busy day we have joined the N11 and are winding towards, Groblersdal. Out of driveways appear cars full of people in their sunday best going to listen to the domine.
I did'nt say what we are doing, we are going to make TV magic (a producers words not mine) with a hot air balloon over the Venda tribe near Louis Trichardt in Limpopo Province. Lets make this blog entry the catch, story so far entry.
Its a TV documentary about tribes, this week we are filming up north and next week we return home to KwaZulu Natal to film with Zulu's.
I think the plan is to fly tribe members over special sites for their tribe. One of the tasks is to fly near what is said to be the oldest living thing, a 3000 year old Baobab tree. I'm looking forward to seeing that. We will also fly from next to a sacred lake in which a snake of fertility lives. More of what is going to happen when we are there and meet the French Film crew. There already have been a couple of heated discussions. The most recent based around our arrival date. The dates were confirmed last month and on their arrival everything was bought a day forward. Impossible for us to change our schedule. Important to write impressions of the crew before we get there because the instant we meet them our opinions will change. So many of these jobs are setup over the phone and you never actually meet the dudes until you get there, creating all sorts of false impressions. I should imagine they think I'm a pretty difficult dude, oh yes I am thats right. I believe the program is called Sky and Earth.
Anyhow
Tims doing his best to keep the Landrover straight at the minute but the road is not helping, it has tracks made by heavy trucks.
Playing on the car CD player is a CD from the front cover of SL, Student Life magazine. Last year on a trip to make an advert in the Cape we also bought SL for the same reason and decided its now a roadtrip tradition.
Unfortunately this CD is not as good as the last as its all hip hop stuff, not really the thing for one person thought to be older than 55 and two nearly 40 year old chaps. Tim the baby at 23 might enjoy it though.
Back to catching up as we drop down into a very pretty valley near Loskop Game reserve.
We left Nottingham Road late yesterday and drove to Bethal where we stayed the night, all went well. The drive was enhanced by Seans clever luxury feature. A 50lt beer barrel with cooling device. There are photos which I will add later when I get to Tims camera. Unfortunately as I was driving I was not able to join the festive proceedings. So just like a Navy rum ration we have a beer ration, 2lts per person per day. The beer is from the Nottingham Road Brewery. (Just pulled over for a picture of Loskop Dam, Tim has declared South African tarmac to be spikey!!) The coal lorries on roads around Bethal have to be seen to be believed. Driving like maniacs ripping up roads all on the way to deliver coal to power stations.
Tim just announced 40km to coffee o'clock, I think that might be a little hopeful, not until everyones out of church will such things come alive.
We have given up on the CD and Sean has found a church service on the radio! They have just cut to a song that sounds much like the old HTV intro song, whatever happened to Gus Honeybun. 0830 and all is well Damwal. |
